Gouron, Iran. 2023. Environment and economy.

Gisher is a community-initiated project to test strategies for creating artificial fish habitat near the village of Gouron, Iran. A prototype was made from repurposed old barrels.

Placed at the right depth of water, the structure works as an artificial reef, providing shelter and breeding grounds for aquatic species, including fish for local fishermen, and promoting biodiversity.

The structure can also help stabilize the underwater ecosystem by creating niches for algae and other marine plants, which can improve water quality and oxygen levels. The use of recycled barrels is an eco-friendly approach to conservation, turning waste into a resource for the health of the sea.
